Executive Director Job Description

SchoolPower, the Laguna Beach Education Foundation, is seeking to hire an Executive Director to lead and manage the organization in support of its mission to raise money to enrich the education of all LBUSD students. In this full-time exempt position, the Executive Director reports to SchoolPower’s Executive Committee and works closely with the SchoolPower Board of Trustees and the SchoolPower Endowment Board.

Essential Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning, Leadership & Board Development

  • Work with the Executive Committee and Board of Trustees to develop and implement SchoolPower strategic goals and priorities.
  • Support and partner with the SchoolPower and Endowment board presidents to lead their boards and run productive meetings.
  • Facilitate trustee communication so that trustees are informed, engaged and involved in the decision-making process.
  • Support and partner with the 1st VP and Nominating Committee to recruit, train and engage new trustees.
  • Help develop board policy, including recommendations regarding amendments to bylaws.

Donor Relations and Stewardship

  • Lead and manage trustee and staff efforts for Community Campaign ($500,000+ annually), and secure call night matching pledges ranging from $5,000 to $25,000.
  • Oversee practices for gift processing and donor acknowledgement, maximizing retention.
  • Partner with VP of Business Alliance to develop and maintain strong and mutually beneficial relationships with business sponsors.
  • Develop and maintain a collaborative partnership with district and school leaders, based on trust, neutrality, listening, and constant communication.
  • Facilitate the LBUSD funding request process to confirm alignment with LBUSD goals and resonance with SchoolPower donors.
  • Administer the Endowment Teacher Grant program.

Financial Performance and Viability

  • Responsible for the overall fiscal integrity and management of SchoolPower.
  • Work with the Accounting & Systems Manager, board treasurer and finance committee to recommend a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements.
  • Ensure that the organization operates efficiently within the approved budget (currently $1-2M), utilizing sound fiscal practices and complying with all regulations.
  • Work with the Accounting & Systems Manager, board treasurer and finance committee on tax preparation and legal compliance.


  • Execute the communications plan with the VP of Public Relations and Marketing team, and handle PR tasks directly when needed.
  • Prepare and edit written communications for publicity and individual outreach, including drafting material for publicity and social media.
  • Support SchoolPower and Endowment presidents and other SchoolPower representatives for internal and external presentations.
  • Communicate and collaborate with non-profit partners such as PTA and Boys and Girls Club to advance mission.
  • Represent the organization at internal and external meetings and events, inspiring support for SchoolPower’s mission and providing a consistent presence for the organization.


  • Develop, retain, and supervise qualified staff (currently three part-time) and conduct HR functions including annual goal setting and performance appraisals.
  • Communicate regularly and conduct staff meetings to keep staff informed and motivated.
  • Oversee the Events & Development Coordinator and partner to strategically develop the annual events/programs, maximizing attendance and revenue.
  • Oversee the Accounting & Systems Manager and partner to maintain and improve upon financial and database management practices.
  • Create and update documentation of staff practices and procedures, training materials, financial practices, job descriptions and employee handbook.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • A passion for public education and SchoolPower’s mission, and the ability to maintain the organization’s focus on that mission.
  • 3-5 years experience as an Executive Director, Director of Development or leader in a non-profit organization.
  • Proven track record in fundraising, including securing large gifts.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Excellent relationship and collaboration skills with all stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage an organization and be an effective leader and team player.
  • Strategic thinker who is self-motivated and self-directed.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion and diplomacy.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, Google Drive, Social Media (Facebook, Instagram).
  • Experience with fundraising databases preferred.
  • Experience with developing budgets.
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree in Philanthropy a plus.

Salary / Working Environment / Physical Requirements:
An ideal candidate will enjoy the camaraderie of being part of a dynamic team of trustees and staff where everyone jumps in to achieve our goals ($1M+ annually) for local public schools. The salary for the full-time exempt Executive Director position will be based on the applicant’s skills and experience. The estimated starting base salary range is $60,000-$70,000, with the opportunity for an annual performance-based bonus.

The SchoolPower office is across from the high school and currently open to the public from MF, 9 am-3 pm. The office is closed during all LBUSD holidays (approximately four weeks) and one month during the summer, creating a family-friendly vacation calendar. It is occasionally necessary to work evenings or weekends for trustee meetings (approx. five), call nights (approx. five) and events (approx. six), and to occasionally drive to meeting or events.

This is primarily an office job, with the exception of long periods of standing/moving during events. Physical requirements include the ability to communicate, hear (which may be corrected), and understand speech at typical levels during meetings and on the telephone. Must possess vision (which may be corrected) to read small print and computer screens, and dexterity of hand and fingers to operate a computer keyboard. Additional physical requirements include the ability to sit and climb stairs.
