Breakfast with Phil Kaye & Sarah Kay

LBHS students and teacher enjoyed a special live performance with two world-renowned spoken word poets, ​Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye, this morning through Project VOICE​.​ The duo has collectively performed in 30 countries on stages from TED Talks to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and garnered over 20 million views online. 2020 has been a tough year for education in our small town and across the globe. Here at SchoolPower we've stayed focused on the heart of our mission: Laguna Beach students. Last week, we deployed over 85 gift packages to families in our district who are facing financial hardship. We are committed to partnering with LBUSD to assist in covering basic needs and supplemental educational resources for students in need. SchoolPower Invites Community to Join Together in Supporting Students, Teachers & Families

SchoolPower kicked off its community campaign with a $10,000 gift to Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach from its newly formed COVID Impact Fund. Thurston Students Program Robots

Sixth graders in Andy Crisp’s computer class, a 6-week long course on the Exploratory Wheel, are reaping the benefits of Mr. Crisp’s recent SchoolPower teacher grant, which funded two different types of robots that are programmable with Swift. Inspired Teachers Awarded $111,450

Great teachers inspire their students, but many times, teachers find themselves inspired by their students. Thurston Middle School Health and PE teacher and Ecology Club mentor Penny Herrick-Dressler is one teacher who recognized a need amongst her students and was inspired to act upon it. “The Healthy Kids Survey shows us that our student body is experiencing stress,” she explains. “That stress is negatively impacting other areas of their lives.” Through a discussion with her Ecology Club students, Herrick-Dressler developed the idea to create the "Away Place," an outdoor space on the Thurston campus where students can sit by themselves [...]

SchoolPower doles out nearly $85,000 in teacher grants

SchoolPower has awarded $84,684 to teachers at all four Laguna Beach Unified School District campuses for programs and equipment. Officials from the nonprofit, which raises funds for the schools, announced the awards during Tuesday’s school board meeting. A record 892 donors contributed to SchoolPower’s Community Campaign, which raised an unprecedented $528,000 this year. Money for teacher grants was part of this total. Read More

Teacher Grants Impact Students Now

“SchoolPower allows us to go beyond the walls of the classroom and explore,” said Thurston science teacher Linda Hill-Lindsay, who received a 2014 SchoolPower Endowment Teacher Grant. The annual Teacher Grant Program, designed so ideas can be quickly funded and put into action, encourages Laguna’s teachers, administrators and classified staff to submit proposals that will have a direct impact on students. SchoolPower Endowment earmarked $82,417 for 16 teacher grants to be utilized this school year. Three grants totalling $11,080 were funded by the Brighter Stars Fund.
